Abstract

Abstract: Healthcare-associated (nosocomial) infections remain one of the most significant threats to patient safety worldwide, affecting on average about 7% of hospitalized patients in high-income countries and up to 15-37% in low- and middle-income settings and intensive care units. Sterilization of medical instruments and reusable devices is one of the central pillars of infection prevention and control, directly reducing the transmission of pathogens, including multidrug-resistant organisms. This article reviews the epidemiological burden of nosocomial infections, compares the main sterilization methods used in modern hospital practice (steam autoclaving, ethylene oxide, hydrogen peroxide plasma, dry heat and irradiation), and discusses organizational measures that strengthen the effectiveness of sterilization centers. The analysis is based on recent international research and shows that consistent quality control of sterilization processes can reduce hospital-acquired infection rates by more than 40%. The article concludes that strengthening sterilization practices, staff training, and quality-assurance systems is essential for reducing the burden of nosocomial infections, particularly in resource-limited healthcare settings such as Uzbekistan.
