Abstract

The immune system of newborns and children has a number of
physiological characteristics associated with its development and maturation. During
the COVID-19 pandemic, particular attention has been paid to the immune response
of children to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This article examines the developmental
characteristics of the immune system in newborns and children, as well as the
mechanisms of immunological tolerance and inflammatory responses during COVID
19. Special attention is given to the interaction between innate and adaptive immunity,
as well as the role of immune cells and inflammatory mediators in the development of
the body’s protective response. Current evidence suggests that the specific
characteristics of the pediatric immune system may influence the clinical course of
COVID-19 and the intensity of inflammatory reactions. Understanding these
mechanisms is important for the early detection of pathological changes, assessment
of the risk of complications, and improvement of approaches to the prevention and
management of coronavirus infection in children.
