RELATIVE CLAUSES IN ENGLISH: A SYNTACTIC AND SEMANTIC ANALYSIS

Relative clauses constitute one of the most important grammatical structures in
English syntax. They enable speakers and writers to provide additional information
about nouns while maintaining coherence and precision in communication. This study
investigates the syntactic and semantic characteristics of English relative clauses,
focusing on their structural patterns, functions, and contribution to meaning. A
qualitative descriptive research design was employed by analyzing examples selected
from English grammar textbooks, academic articles, and authentic language corpora.
The findings reveal that relative clauses significantly enhance sentence complexity and
textual cohesion. Restrictive and non-restrictive relative clauses perform different
semantic functions, while the selection of relative pronouns depends on both syntactic
position and semantic interpretation. The study concludes that understanding the
interaction between syntax and semantics is essential for effective English language
teaching and learning.
