THE IMPORTANCE OF PRAGMATIC COMPETENCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

The primary goal of language learning is communication. While students often spend years studying grammar and vocabulary, many still struggle to interact naturally with native and non-native speakers of English. One reason for this difficulty is the lack of pragmatic competence. Pragmatic competence involves understanding how language functions in real-life situations and how social factors influence communication.Abstract
In modern language education, grammatical knowledge alone is insufficient for
successful communication. Learners must also develop pragmatic competence, which
refers to the ability to use language appropriately in different social and cultural
contexts. This article discusses the importance of pragmatic competence in English
language teaching (ELT), the challenges learners face, and practical strategies teachers
can employ to improve students' communicative effectiveness.
