Abstract

Abstract: This article looks at the role of travel in the personal growth and cultural understanding of university students. Specifically, it looks at how travel relates to students' knowledge of other cultures, communication skills and self-confidence. A qualitative methodology is used to review and analyze previous studies about travel and learning. It was found that the benefits of travel were affected by: 1) the traveler's purpose, 2) contact with local people and 3) the length of the trip. Travelers who interact with local communities can significantly improve their cultural awareness, language practice and independence. This article adds to current knowledge about the relationship between travel and learning.
