STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS OF HISTORICAL CITIES IN THE MIDDLE AGES

Abstract In the Middle Ages, cities consisted of three parts (ark, shahristan, and rabod), each of which was surrounded by fortified walls. The cities were entered through gates. For example, in the Middle Ages, there were 6 gates in Samarkand, 11 in Bukhara, 12 in Tashkent, 4 in Shahrisabz, 5 in Merv, and 6 in Old Termez. In addition to gates, cities also had gates such as darb and kopka. They were smaller than gates. There is also an opinion that most cities had 12 gates.
