Abstract

This article investigates nonverbal means of communication in the English language from a sociopragmatic perspective, focusing on how gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, posture, proxemic behaviour, haptics, chronemics and paralinguistic features function within concrete social contexts to construct, reinforce, or negotiate meaning alongside verbal utterances. Sociopragmatics, understood as the branch of pragmatics that examines how social variables such as status, distance, gender, age and cultural background influence the choice and interpretation of communicative strategies, provides a productive framework for analysing nonverbal behaviour, since such behaviour is rarely universal and is instead shaped by the norms of the speech community that produces it. Drawing on data from authentic English-language interaction (film dialogue, recorded conversation, and published pragmatic research), the article classifies nonverbal means according to Poyatos's and Knapp's typologies, examines their politeness- and power-related functions, and discusses cases in which nonverbal signals either support or contradict the accompanying verbal message. The findings indicate that nonverbal means in English discourse are not merely accompaniments to speech but independent pragmatic resources that carry illocutionary force, regulate turn-taking, mark social distance, and signal (im)politeness. The article concludes that a sociopragmatic approach to nonverbal communication is indispensable for a full account of meaning-making in English and has direct implications for intercultural communication and foreign-language pedagogy.
