In today’s globalized world, learning a foreign language has become increasingly important for people of all ages. Older adults are showing greater interest in acquiring foreign language skills for various purposes, including travel, employment, communication with family members, and personal development. However, unlike younger learners, they often encounter numerous challenges that affect the effectiveness of the learning process. These challenges include age-related cognitive changes, reduced memory capacity, lack of confidence, anxiety, limited exposure to the target language, and insufficient access to modern educational technologies. Despite these difficulties, research indicates that older adults can successfully learn a foreign language when appropriate teaching strategies and supportive learning environments are provided. This article examines the major obstacles experienced by older language learners, analyzes the factors influencing their learning outcomes, and proposes practical recommendations to improve the effectiveness of foreign language education for this age group. The findings emphasize that motivation, individualized instruction, and continuous practice play a significant role in helping older adults achieve successful language learning.
