THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SPEAKING ABILITY IN ENGLISH LEARNING

This thesis focuses on the role of confidence in speaking ability which is the most fundamental skill that allows students to share ideas, feelings, opinions effectively in English. However, many students encounter with various challenges in speaking foreign languages because of psychological factors, especially lack of self-confidence. The study is based on two previous articles: The Correlation between Students’ Self-Confidence and Speaking Performance by Sudirman et al. and The Correlation between Students’ Self-Confidence and Speaking Achievement by Novia et al.. The quantitative correlational methods have been used to investigate whether self-confidence influences students’ speaking skills in both studies. These articles show that sense of confidence can be vital factor in students’ speaking ability. Because confident students seem to communicate with others easily and without hesitation. Therefore, it is concluded that self -assurance has a significant influence on using language in communication, although there are key components such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and motivation which also have a considerable impact.
