Abstract

This paper explores the distinctive structural, semantic, and cognitive mechanisms underlying term formation in contemporary English. Terminology serves as the bedrock of specialized knowledge representation, and English, as the global lingua franca of science and technology, exhibits unique patterns in how it generates new nomenclature. By analyzing standard morphological derivation, syntactic composition, semantic shifts, and modern abbreviational trends, this study identifies the dominant productivity of syntactic compounding and conversion. Furthermore, it examines the expanding role of cognitive metaphor and internationalization in modern English terminology, providing structural insights for translators, linguists, and domain specialists.
