Abstract

Speaking is one of the most challenging skills for learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). While linguistic knowledge is essential for successful communication, psychological factors also play a significant role in speaking performance. Among these factors, self-confidence is considered one of the most influential elements affecting learners’ ability to communicate effectively in English. Students with higher levels of self-confidence are generally more willing to participate in classroom discussions, express their opinions, and engage in communicative activities. In contrast, learners with low self-confidence often experience anxiety, fear of making mistakes, and reluctance to speak. This paper explores the relationship between self-confidence and speaking performance in English language learning. It discusses the factors that contribute to the development of self-confidence and presents practical strategies that teachers can implement to support learners in improving their speaking abilities. The findings indicate that a positive classroom environment, constructive feedback, and communicative teaching practices can significantly enhance learners’ confidence and speaking performance.
