This article examines the main stages in the development of scholarly research on youth vocabulary in the German language (Jugendsprache). It traces the evolution of research approaches from a normative and evaluative perspective—where youth speech was considered a deviation from standard language—to modern sociolinguistic and digital interpretations that view it as a dynamic social and cultural phenomenon. Special attention is given to key scholars in German linguistics and sociolinguistics, as well as to the impact of media communication and digital platforms on the transformation of youth vocabulary. The study demonstrates that the analysis of youth language reflects broader shifts in linguistic theory during the 20th–21st centuries, moving from structural-normative approaches toward functional, discourse-oriented, and digital perspectives.
