ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE–BASED DIGITAL STORYTELLING AS A TOOL FOR INCREASING EMOTIONAL ENGAGEMENT IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOMS
Abstract
Artificial intelligence has become one of the most influential innovations in modern education. In recent years, English language teachers have increasingly integrated digital technologies into classroom instruction in order to improve students’ communication skills, creativity, and motivation. One particularly innovative approach is AI-based digital storytelling. This method combines artificial intelligence tools with narrative activities, allowing students to create, develop, and present stories using multimedia resources. Digital storytelling encourages students to express ideas creatively while simultaneously practicing language structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. AI tools can generate prompts, provide grammar suggestions, evaluate pronunciation, and personalize learning experiences according to individual proficiency levels. As a result, learners become more confident and emotionally engaged in the learning process. Research demonstrates that emotionally engaging educational environments positively influence language acquisition. Students who enjoy classroom activities tend to participate more actively and develop stronger communication skills. AI-assisted storytelling is especially beneficial for shy or anxious learners because it creates a supportive and low-pressure environment where students can practice speaking repeatedly without fear of embarrassment. Another important advantage of AI-supported storytelling is learner autonomy. Students can independently revise stories, improve pronunciation, and experiment with vocabulary. This increases both motivation and responsibility for learning outcomes. Furthermore, storytelling activities improve not only speaking but also listening, writing, and critical thinking skills.
